6542 Gold, an exception to my own rules.

Oct 27, 2013,02:45 AM

You know that I am not a colored gold guy... In my collection, I have only one rose gold Watch, a JLC Geomatic, a piece of Watch, elegant, dressy, which came with its box and papers. Most of the time I neglect colored gold Watch, I don't even have a look at them. But there are a few exceptions, such as a JLC Geophysic, which I would love to find in rose gold, and in yellow gold as well, or, yes, you do read me well, a Patek 5070 in yellow gold, because of its strong looking black dial. There is one more exception: The 6542. While my first choice would ALWAYS be the stainless steel version, how can you resist to that one? ( Credit picture: John Goldenberg, if I am correct ).

This light Brown dial, the famous SYL signature, and the Brown bakelite insert are great détails which make this Watch a very appealing one. Needless to say that I would dream to get on, even without the SYL's signature. Just one detail I don't like, the bracelet... But I guess that this is one of the easiest issue to solve! wink Have a great Sunday. Nicolas

Interesting psychology....

.....i have more problem owning a gold Rolex than I do, say, a gold JLC. Not sure why, but I have some trouble getting my head around a gold Rolex.

It has, in my opinion, to be relatively small and thin...

I couldn't imagine myself getting a modern one in colored gold, indeed. That is also why I would necessarily remove the bracelet: It is way too much for my poor brain. ;) I think it is all about the size, my friend. Best, Nicolas

Also...

....i see Rolex as a tool watch...functional etc. The gold is a paradox in that sense.

That makes sense.

I totally get your point. But on an aesthetical point of view, I can't get my eyes off this 6542... ;) Best, Nicolas

I agree, a paradox for sure; however,

Although the gold sport watch doesn't make sense to most of us, Rolex has produced some wonderful gold gentleman's watches. For me, the simple and elegant design of some of the earlier pieces are beautiful, and well worth the addition to a serious collect...

That is true...

...Iceman has one that just kills me every time.

Agree with you 100% for sure

For sure Rolex is more well known for their toolwatches than dresswatches but there are quite nice exceptions (ref 1012 - 36 mm diam.). ...

Or there is no exception at all

I prefer a full gold 1675 concorde, despite the bakelite bezel insert is beautiful. Ok, uno per uno :)

The 1675 " Concorde "... Not bad, but honestly, this 6542 is, IMO

One or two steps above... But ok for the uno per uno. ;) Nicolas

Interesting

This watch I would describe as nice to have NOT must have. If you have 100 nice Rolexes and are looking for something unusual I would perhaps consider this. There is something about Gold Rolexes that reminds of 'vulgarity' perhaps? Baron also stated it we...

Rules are made to be followed... Or broken! This 6542 is a good...

... excuse to brake your own "Golden Rule" my friend! PS: I was offered and had in my hands an example exactly as the one on your photo a couple of years ago. Of course its price exceeded Dexter Morgans budget and had to le it go. But it was a magnificent...

Truly a highly priced piece, but its rarity and most of all, appeal explain that.

We'll see... Un abrazo, Amigo! Nicolas

I share my 1675/8. It is not the 6542 gold of course...

... but I enjoy it so much though! Un abrazo Nicolas! Abel, Dexter from the Pampas. ...

Here's one for the JLC fans

A very rare Cartier double name Master Mariner. This is an original piece with Cartier serial stamped on the reverse lug. Unique in it's own right, and like many of the rare gold Rolex, well worth having in a balanced collection. However... this is a Role...

That is a very nice one, Billy.

These Master Mariner watches have really something. And the double signature is a cherry on an already delicious cake. About JLC Cartier watches, there are two which are on the top for me: The Memovox, and the Reverso. Both vintage, of course. Best! Nicol...

Nicolas, you like to win the easy game

If somebody likes yellow gold this 6542 is the top level !! And S&L is the cherry on the cake. FYI long ago I ownned this one ......... I know it's not a bakelite bezel but it was a nice look even if I don't wear colored gold anymore. ...
