What are you hunting for?

 By: Baron - Mr Red : April 23rd, 2014-07:03
Lets be honest, one of the fun aspects of vintage Rolex is the "hunt". Sometimes a hunt can last years and sometimes it is over very quickly. So lets hear it....what is your Number One target now... I will tell you mine.....its a 1965 Gilt 5512 Submariner...

Black dial Gold Newman (one can always dream hehehe) Iceman

For me Joe it's a 6263

 By: johnnya : April 23rd, 2014-10:33
My next one has to be a 6263 black dial with black bezel I just love this watch configuration with the screw down pushers which gives the watch a chunkier feel than a 6239 My first vintage Rolex was a black 6263 about 10 years ago which I had to sell a fe...

still desperate for a tripple 6 seadweller...

 By: DivingT : April 23rd, 2014-11:50
But still sadly not finding one with any form of paper work or even a recent Rolex service certificate. Perhaps I should correct this, I can find with the white gold surrounds on the index's, but not one with the complete tritium index's. The search conti...

Same for me :-)

A nice full set triple six or a nice full set 1016. Best David

Many things!

By: Le Monde Edmond : April 23rd, 2014-13:05
Joe, What do you mean by subsequent rendition? You mean the next model within the 5512? Does that mean a 4L PCG? Or the white print non pcg vesion that came around 1967/1968? Or a 5512 underline dial? Christies has a very nice 5512 coming in May. I am doi...

Either a porcelain dial early Daytona or a winner's Daytona

 By: daytonaman799 : April 23rd, 2014-20:21
I just concluded what was probably close to a 10 year pursuit of a COMEX SeaDweller. That watch is now being serviced which has led me to wearing a Daytona my in laws gave for an engagement present 11 years ago. This has led me to read up on the Christies...

What is interesting is the vast spread of different desires....

.......nothing special is "hot" in vintage Rolex..... It is ALL hot

Hunting and dreaming are two different things.

 By: amanico : April 24th, 2014-02:05
I am dreaming of a 6200, but this is not very realistic... A military 1675 as well... UAE is my favourite. Or a 6542 " Red ". I am hunting some tough watches: Tudor 7922, 7924 ARA, for example. Some easier to grab, a Tudor MN Submariner Ref 94010 or a 792...

A valid distinction....

 By: Baron - Mr Red : April 24th, 2014-02:31
......my net is wide, but my focus always needs to be narrow! I am evaluating a lot of different themes and I think my collection is taking some new directions, but adding another 5512 is one of these "focus" targets. 1019 is one we share...but I will mak...

wanna be honest with you ???

nt

here you are ..

 By: marcello pisani : April 24th, 2014-03:26
the " desert sub " ( aka " black sub " ) in his outstanding and " cold " beauty .... absolutely stunning charcoal colour ... very cold to the touch with case, back and metal strap teflon coated ( of course with Rolex Geneva confirmation) .. maybe only 3 (...

no back engravings ...

 By: marcello pisani : April 24th, 2014-03:34
I would compare it to the essential Malevich's square .... very few people were able to appreciate the " simply cold " beauty of this watch .... for the couple of hours spent together was able to create in me the same sensations you feel watching at the w...

Nice comparison, Marcello. Thanks for the precision, too.

 By: amanico : April 24th, 2014-03:37
A bit like a 5513 M.N, but without the engravings, then? Where was it bought by the SAF Army? At a Rolex AD, or directly to Geneva? Best, Nicolas

well .. with all the due respect ..

 By: marcello pisani : April 24th, 2014-03:42
to 5513 MN it was another stuff ... btw this is the only example of teflon coating ever seen ( and most likely the very only one made ) : the watch was completely un-reflecting even under direct sun light .. had a sort of alien-look .. not easy to describ...

Wow! Thanks again, for these precisions.

 By: amanico : April 24th, 2014-03:48
Don't tell me more about it, I don't want to have another object of obsession. ;) Best! Nicolas

welcome ...

 By: marcello pisani : April 24th, 2014-09:18
it's a plot against Baron .. LOL LOL LOL ...

For Baron, then.... ;)

 By: amanico : April 24th, 2014-09:24
...

uhm...not sure that is a 65

 By: Baron - Mr Red : April 24th, 2014-10:46

No I can see its not from 65

 By: Baron - Mr Red : April 24th, 2014-12:51
......its like a Jedi thing.... i can feel it. aha...aha.

... Or not. ;) [nt]

 By: amanico : April 24th, 2014-13:22

easy....

 By: Baron - Mr Red : April 27th, 2014-06:39
......its Nicolas...he is trying to torment me....so i am guessing that he has any mod-60s Sub and will call it a 65 to torment me...especially as he once mentioned to me that he rarely ever sees 65s....so basically I am spoofing him

yeah yeah....

 By: Baron - Mr Red : April 27th, 2014-06:52
...... loads from 66 onwards i find..... very few from 65 or 64.

+1... I also noted that those from 1964 rarely came with a nice dial.

 By: amanico : April 27th, 2014-07:10
I mean, a dial in nice condition. I saw a bit more from 1965, and muuuch more from 1966. Can't explain why, unless there are a lot of vintage Rolex collectors from 1964 and 1965 who keep them. ;) Best, Nicolas

You noticed it, too? I once found one, but it was a FAP GMT.

 By: amanico : April 30th, 2014-22:30
And the seller wanted the moon for it... Damn! Nicolas

For me .. Humble & simple.. Or not ?

 By: hs111 : April 26th, 2014-09:08
.. Let me think a bit: 1/ first ( humble) target is a very nice, gilt or nicely patinated 1016 Explo ( maybe a 6610 instead ?), preferably w B+ P 2/ a glossy dialled Sub ( as now I've only mattes) eg: 5508 with gilt or very nice patina 3/ possibly an upgr...

Well.. Indeed, you've been sitting close enough.. When we touched that marvel ! ..

 By: hs111 : April 26th, 2014-09:35
.. so probably it's not so much "if" , but just " when".. Until then, lots of other things to take care of ! - but thx for the kind encouragement.. It sure was quite an "ueber-cool" piece ! We'll see what's in the boxes of the future.. Best, hs

To be honest with vintage Rolex you have to be opportunistic

 By: Bill : April 26th, 2014-13:47
As you noted cast a wide net but setting goals for perfection sometimes will lead to never pulling the trigger or missing opportunities. Each time a perfect watch presents it self I have time to fall in love even without having previously desired it. Over...

Hunt is over

Congrats! Happy for you!

Nicely done!

How old is that one? Looks like a last batch witha luminova dial?

That' s right

 By: ch9698 : April 27th, 2014-21:51
It's a no 2004 no hole case, put in a safe with his stickers during 10 years

So...

Pointed Crown Guard, Gilt Dial, Underline ? That would be nice to add to compliment this beautiful 5512 I myself am looking for a nice gilt dial sub, 5513 or 5512 if I'm lucky… I sort of give up hunting for a chapter ring 5512, the price has gone up crazy...

Luckily i dont hunt.

 By: Iceman : May 9th, 2014-15:14
I try to be always open minded. So that when a great example is available i am able to consider and aquire it without any hesitation. Works well for me cause Quality, desirability and rarity comes to play everytime i add a watch. It happened 3 weeks ago i...

A 5513 gilt

 By: Mike1066 : May 9th, 2014-16:16
A nice example. One day. Oh, and I wouldn't turn down Nico's 7924! Great watch. A great 5508 would be nice as well - red triangle insert. Cool 16600 COMEX. All the wearability of modern Rolex with a cool and rare aspect to it. Great find! V/R Mike

The Tudor 7924 is a must have, in my opinion.

One of the most interesting BC, ever... Best, my dear Mike. Nicolas
