Impulse Watch Buying Leads to Dilemma

Mar 30, 2012,07:43 AM

I was in the mood to buy a new watch, and visited a nice store in Englewood, NJ.  I came home with a GP Vintage 1945 XXL Small Seconds in Pink Gold, a stunning watch.

I traded towards it my IWC Top Gun Double Chronograph.  Upon arriving home, I realized that I also own a JLC Squadra Hometime in Rose Gold.  My new GP and my JLC look very similar.  So, of course, buyer's remorse set in.

I am sitting here looking at both watches wondering why I bought a watch, which is admittedly stunning, that so closely resembles a watch I have owned and enjoyed for years.  It seems that I should sell one or the other since I am not in the financial league of Saudi oil tycoons, and my watch collection must remain limited to a few watches.   I was told that the retail price for the GP is going to rise to $27,000 in the near future.

Question for Purists:   what would you do in this situation?  Would you keep both watches?  Would you sell one?   Would you perhaps not wear the GP and sell it once the MRSP jumps up?  Would you sell the JLC b/c you have owned it for years, and enjoyed it and now it is time for something new?

Or, is it a fact that these two watches, while similar, are actually very different from each other, and that there is no reason not to own and enjoy both of them?

Both are outstanding watches. Perhaps you are unconsciously drawn to the square watches that are elegant? End of he day, I would not worry about the value - as you have already shown spending $27K has brought young closer to the answer. My 2c. J.

To me they are very different watches...

...even though I do understand your feeling that you now seem to have two very similar pieces. The GP is a rectangular watch, whereas the JLC is more of a square. For me personally, the JLC gives off a sportier air. I prefer the GP because the dial is muc...

I would keep both. Both watches have heritage behind them and both got class. The JLC is a little more sporty. You could wear JLC to afternoon tea/cocktail party and wear the GP to weddings or formal functions. But if you must sell one, I agreed with prev...

If you can not trade GP for another watch of some sort at your AD, for full value , I will be surprised. Call and find out. AD's are very understanding when it comes to a few days' old purchase, as long as the watch is immaculate, of course. If you can no...
