If you have to ask - you can't afford it... - window shopping in Copenhagen

Oct 31, 2009,13:48 PM

I don't know in detail on watch shops around the world - but in Denmark you very seldom see the price tag on watches in window displays - meaning that you really have no idea on the price range of any watches - unless you have a good general idea.

We have a saying in Denmark - "If you have to ask - you can't afford it" - don't know if I agree - sometimes you could get a positive surprise.

But how is it in other part of the world - I guess there could be some local laws that demand prices to be shown, but not in Denmark. Here you can do a lot of window shopping without having any idea on the price.

Here is a some pictures from a quick stole from my present work by some different watch shops - please notice the lack of any price tags.

Enjoy the walk ;-)

And back to work ... ;-)

And how is it In you part of the world ?

Hi Jan, thanks for this wonderful post. Window shopping is sheer fun and it cost nothing ... . I visited Copenhagen last year and took this picture .. Over here in Belgium, practically everything in the "vitrine" comes with a price tag ... so no use going...

In Austria, it is very similar ...

First of all, thanks for the picture book showing your home! Here in Austria, the situation with price tags is very much the same as in Denmark. Beginning with a certain price category (over 2,000 Euros, roughly) the price tags are either completely omitt...

I was in Vienna 4 years ago and the shops were intimidating to go in indeed! There were only price tags shown for the "lower priced" models for most watches. I remember seeing Tag and Longines prices but other were omitted. Seems like the financial crisis...

Its almost the same. There's a price tag to the watches that they display but it is almost always hidden under the strap. Maybe the principle holds. But do they give you the "dirty look" when you ask? Cheers Pat

If that is the tone that is taken with me

then my swift and consistent response to the sales person for anything is "the product is yours, the money is mine, and it'll stay that way". I see absolutely nothing wrong in finding out what I and paying for and how much I am paying for it. I do agree t...

Additionally, it is my impression that especially wealthy people ...

It's because jewelry stores make an exception

In Denmark it is the law that you must put price-tags on the products you show in a window. But exceptions were made regarding - iirc - jewelry and antiquity stores. The first due to safety issues, the latter due to the fact that you often negotiate price...

There is a small shop in Paris where you can find Ole Mathiesen watches.

Liked the touristic photos better than the watches! Is that first photo taken from the small plaza in front of the Angleterre Hotel? Also love the photos of the port area. Jeff

Italy's policy hugely varies

Jan, thanks for your beautiful pics of beautiful places When I look at watch shops here in Italy, sometimes I find price tags, sometimes not. However, they're often pointless. Chances there are that the real price is significantly lower than the one that ...
