Yes, now know it is true there are at least two bezels that are OME for just the 16550. I also now know that the photo you show is the very first, probably from 8.4/8.5 serial 16550,just like mine. The book vintage rolex sports models by skeet and ural also shows this to be correct (p86). A big thank you to you all. I now rest easy!

Hi Guys, I have just committed to a Rolex Explorer 16550 with black rail dial. I am told the watch is original by a dealer in the US. The font on the number is different in that the top line extends further on the other 16550's I have now viewed. The watc...

Just to clarify!

I am talking about the number 1 font and the different size of the font line at the top of the 1. Can anyone tell me if this bezel is the original for a Rolex 16550? Thanks!

Ok, here is a correct 16550 bezel.

.. ..the more I like it : To me its appeal is fresh, modern and "self-confident".. - BTW: this creamy dial on your pic is breathtaking 1 - Also, there never is an end with these Rolexes, with so different characters, .. the Abyss is getting deeper & deepe...

That 16550 is a very particular reference, indeed.

Yes, the bezel of the 16550 is different from the one of the 16570.

 By: marcello pisani : October 6th, 2014-11:00
very close to 16570 one .. but differencies are so small that a very good pic is necessary to spot them.

REALLY!!

I will post good clear pics when I get the watch. What are the differences in the early 16550 font?

the very first bezel for 16550 ...

 By: marcello pisani : October 7th, 2014-10:15
is this one ( extremely close to the later one for 16570 ) ; used for a short time ( a couple of years ?? ) , and btw there was (as usual ) an overlap with the most common one for 16550. from a Rolex booklet ( 1986 ) : ...

AFAIK ...

 By: marcello pisani : October 7th, 2014-10:18
earliest 16550 are in the 8.39 case range ( beginning of 1984 ) .. so in a 8.5 watch the mk1 would fit perfectly.

Yes, thats my bezel.

it just looks like your bezel : as written in a previous post the best and conclusive thing is to remove the bezel and see if the back is completely flat ( in this case it's a mk1 for 16550 ) or has a groove made to host the gasket ( if so it's a 16570 be...
