Another Auction and another big day for Rolex

Sep 20, 2014,11:33 AM

Today there was an auction in London where they had a Paul Newman, several early subs and an SAS Explorer II. All did very wiell with the Paul Newman as best in show. It was interesting ti see how much interest the PN garnered. They really have evolved into a class all its own. The watch had by far the most enthusiastic interestI of all the pieces at the auction. Bids came from the room, internet as well as absentee bids that simply blew away estimates.  I tried to buy the Explorer II but lost by the narrowest of margins. It really seems that Rolex has moved into the pole position at vintage auctions vs PP. Hope all have a great weekend.

.....most price records at auction are held by Patek....most if not all. I think its fair to say that the gap between Rolex and Patek has narrowed, but I think its a big jump to say that Rolex has taken pole position in vintage world.

My take

Joe, Please keep in mind that Rolex and Patek are two completely different animals! Rolex does NO complicated watches aside from a chronograph and Patek are the masters of complications - so in that respect you cannot really compare the two and of course ...

Rolex is like an equity while Patek is like a AAA bond. In good times, the equity has the "momentum", and right now that is exactly what you describe....and indeed what I agreed with...namely, at this point in time Rolex are closing the gap. However, you ...

Fully agree with you

You bring up many valid points no doubt. I also think there are unfortunately a lot of speculators with Rolex. Another problem Rolex will have in the future - I am most certain - is increasingly fraud. There is so much money in vintage Rolex that this wil...

many factors to consider....

.....Rolex don't really service their vintage watches any more...so as time progresses, it will get harder and harder to keep the pieces healthy. Patek, on the other hand, services and has parts for any watch they have ever made. I think one thing does se...

Exactly my point
