Confession Time: Rolex Yacht Master II, stainless steel.

Oct 24, 2014,23:38 PM

When the Yacht Master II was unveiled, several years ago, I was skeptical, for aesthetical reasons, mostly.

More than skeptical, to be honest, I just didn't like it.

Since... Since I saw the stainless steel version. First in pictures, then in the real. And I had a lot of time, between two planes, in several airports, to test it.

The blue ceramic bezel, the dial, the original complication ( 10 minutes retrograde chronograph, for regattas ), all these détails made me reconsider the Watch.

I am not still in the mood to buy it, but I must confess that I changed my mind.

I find it cool and original. Big, certainly, with its 44 mm ( ! ) case, but far from being unwearable, once on the wrist, at the point that I had to check the size more than once!

The Yacht Master is the most Un Rolex among Rolex watches, and the " II " doesn't escape to that observation. Maybe it is why I love the Yacht Master so much?

Funny how a version can lead you to reconsider your point of view on a reference.

What is your opinion on this one?

Best,

Nicolas.

I've bee able to see it in the metal, and like you, I didn't like it at first sight. I thought the color combinations were too loud, and I just didn't like the size. Strange when you think that the YM is my favorite Rolex, but then again, this is a very d...

Like you, I still need some time to be fully convinced...

and to buy it, as I have many other priorities, but my perception of the Watch is more positive, now.... Yes, you made me think about it, but I never saw someone wearing it! Best, and thanks for your input, Richard. Nicolas

Quite ambigous, I still am.. Although seen only on pics.. For humble me it's not..

.. something, I would like to try on; also the dial too noisy & somehow unbalanced. - On the other hand, I agree, that although a bit " Un-Rolex", it provides a tint of originality ( retrograde Chrono) and freshness. - Finally, its size with 44 mm usually...

Controversial, I totally agree.

It is all about coolness ( a sentiment you are very familiar with...;) ) versus functionality ( regattas apart )... Not for everybody, but it is far from being a " vanilia Watch ". :) All the best, my friend. Nicolas

The functionality is there and great for those who..

..actually use it. But for practical reason, not for me. If I have the choice, I will go for the Sky Dweller, not sure if available in stainless steel version or not, now. I did not like it when it was released but now, it's a different story. You are rig...

Thanks for your feedback, Keith. I must say...

That I didn't change my mind, yet, on the Sky Dweller. Try this one, on, you may be surprised. Not about the functionality, except if you are a sailor, but about the coolness... Surprising.. Best, my friend. Nicolas

I was never a fan of the gold or TT versions

but this one I immediately LOVED it the minute I saw it.

You finally got it?

If i am honest, i could not consider this one for a few reasons. First, at that size, it is simply too big for me. Second, when a watch is that type of size, it would be important to me that it was not too extroverted. This watch is very extroverted in ch...

But the curious thing is that it doesn't look like a 44mm watch!

One of my very favourite modern Rolexes, to say all. Best, Amigo. Nicolas

The stainless steel version is very nice but

the largest watch that will not look too ridiculous on me would be 40mm, 44mm is bit too large for me. Yet it is still a very attractive Rolex if one has to use the function. I do not think it is too flashy. Best regards, Baxter

Thanks for your feedback, Baxter.
