Ditto. I enjoy these type of conversations that give rise to alternative POVs. I especially like when we take objective views and highlight when it’s subjective.
So, I’ve seen collecting evolve into flex shows and where some folks call themselves collectors but don’t know how a mechanical watch works at all, what the history or provenance is. They pretty much buy based entirely on looks and what the latest YouTube video tells them. For me, this a liberal use of the term “collector”. I would say instead that they are hobbyist. And perhaps this is by design as the watch industry needs to sell new watches to make more money.
So the 16202 is a “better” watch than the 15202 or the 5402 but that term “better”is based on looks and some technical improvements. It does not take into account rarity, provenance and heritage. These 3 factors are important to me. Much like collecting art 🖼️. I would rather have an original van Gogh, bearing the marks of age and the inferior pigments used at the time than a print from a digitally altered and “improved” version from the internet.
White date wheels are chosen for a reason for certain watches. It’s to give a clear nod to the heritage of the watch. To me, it also is mark of significance. So on silver or blue dial of the 81000, the 8010 or the 4266, all have white date wheels. Same as the AP 5402 and the AP 15300.
I’m looking at watches as art. I use my phone for to tell the time.
I recognize that you are have a different perspective and that’s cool. I agree that nothing is sacrosanct.
However, watches are an antiquated means of telling the time, a watch that holds the most significance and rarity outweighs a blue date wheel or such. That’s bubble gum stuff for me. I will say, that when possible, get both the ones with provenance and mix it up with some modern adaptations.
However, we would do well to not conflate the two.
When rushing into a house on fire, I know which one I would rescue first.

... however if I had to judge, the following points would bother me with the 41 (believe it or not, perhaps it's a 'ex post' view but I really feel that way): 1) I don't like the movement (size, looks, technology and winding feel) 2) looking at the dial: ...

To let folks know that they have an alternative between the 38 mm and the 42 mm. Just got lucky with the 000/225 ☺️
