50 years ago today...

50 years ago today, my father bought this, his first, Rolex, an Explorer 1016.

He wore the watch until 1974 when he bought a GMT Master 1675. In 1984, I received the Explorer from him at a tender age of 15. I wore it daily until 1999, when I bought my first new Rolex, a SD16600.

I remember the incidents for many scratches on the watch, from biking accidents to my first experiences with the other sex (oh, well!).

Today, the Explorer is one of my core watches. Actually it is much more than a watch but the single most important item that describes quality and classic design to me: it never failed me and never looked out of place. And it helped me realise early on that hard work can pay off!

My father turned 80 in good health a few weeks ago and I am very indebted to him for triggering that quest for quality in me very early!

I managed to keep all the paper work, only the box is gone. Well, to be precise: I remember using it for my matchbox toy cars as a child, until it was totally wrecked.

Historically, it is interesting to note that my father managed to get 15% discount and that 2700.- Austrian Schilling equals Euro 193.- today. But well, it was a monthly wage, then!

50 years of history and many more to come!

But what to say about the Watch, except that it is just sublime. And the complete set + the story behind this Watch are just the cherry on the birthday cake. I do hope that you have a child, and that you will give it to him or her. Thank you so much for s...

A great story priceless in many ways

The first is the family bond and the life stories you will carry all your life. Second is the historical reference from a vintage Rolex perspective. It confirms various aspects of how certificates where issued, hand written in this case. The timing cert f...

Now THAT is what Rolex is all about.

That story just sums it up for me. It is what Rolex is all about. A watch was bought a long time ago to serve a purpose, it stood the test of many years and became part of a family. It was handed down from father to son and is still ticking away and will ...

Sums up the value of a watch, and it has very little to do with price. There are very few things that can be passed on like that, and yet hold countless memories. The watch is still looking pristine too. Congratulations! A great milestone.

Wonderful post! I wonder how many 1016s have stories like this?

The first 1016 I ever saw was from 1967, and it originally belonged to the father of the guy wearing it. For me, 1016 just may be THE Rolex, and yours is fantastic!

Can you share what kind of time capsule you use...

Anatol, Happy 50th Birfday to the Rolex Explorer I; the only Rolex that appeals to me for itself and without hyperbole of the other models. It looks so right with the loose bracelet links from the passage of time and adventures. The missing box used as a ...
