Hulk and Malachite

Jul 28, 2014,09:53 AM

I have been working/living in and out of the D.R. Congo for the last 6 years (happily "retired" of that now); that means -at least- 2 things:

1- Despite making purchases I have not had occasion to wear my watches during those years (hence loving it now!); in DRC you want to make yourself "forgettable", no special item, color or sign that would attract attention on you.

2- I have been in close contact with the purest malachite that can nowadays be found in the world; and I have brought back home plenty!

In its natural state the malachite is a semi-precious green stone used by women for jewelry, some watch brands also use it from time to time (Piaget as an example). Industrially the malachite is basically copper, oxide copper (hence the green color, same as the old bronze statues than become green when oxidized). The malachite is purchased by tons and processed in the furnaces or the solvent extraction plants to make the well known red/brownish copper ingots or cathodes used in many industries (each house in the world has an average 17kgs of copper). The purest grade of saturation of copper in malachite is about 35%Cu, which can easily be found Katanga, the mineral rich southern province of D.R.Congo.

Well, today I found the perfect habitat for the Hulk! enjoy.

Cheers,

Alex

You must have many interesting stories from central Africa, Alex. Such a complex country and political situation but so rich in natural resources. The richness of colour and the beautiful laminations in that first piece of malachite are beautiful. And the...

The malachite helped to give some green energy ;) I actually collect few minerals and been thinking that they could work well on few other watches; will sure give it a try at least!

That is a lot of green!
