I agree with you on a couple of points

baron,
Your erudite and eloquent, provocative piece resonates with many and I count myself as one of them.
We have a couple or three PuristS' adages that have served us well.
"Seeking perfection in an imperfect world."
All who enter our fora have their own standards and motives of collecting, whether it is their starting piece or watch No. 62.
We don't really know what those are until they share, Eventually, if some parties are interested, it may all come out.
We may discover what or why that collector you cited, has such strict criteria that nearly all watches fail his standards. And yet, he has a 'collection'...nay, mayhaps even a 'perfect' one...that would be interesting.
We may discover what drives another watch buddy to squirrel away 50 Rolex watches, essentially all looking alike, except he (and presumably others) knows the subtle differences.
We may discover that some 'humblebrags' also work alone from home like you, so they have nobody to provide feedback (positive or negative) on their cherished timepieces. PuristSPro is their salvation: here is where we come in, inclusive and welcoming without preconceived bias and censure. Thanks be to the PuristS...amen.
Passion Opinion Information
This motto is well known but what lies beneath is more important.
Although we are encouraged to share our preferences, the raison d'etre of our community is to provide P.O.I. so that the reader (tyro or expert) can make informed choices.
Ancient members may remember the driver to form ThePuristS and now PuristSPro was as antidote to the toxic lies, half truths and errors propounded on the early InterWeb.
Here is where our evangelical zeal plays out. No blame. No judgement. Just welcome and encourage learning. For some, the journey is ardous.......
Like all acolytes, I illustrate this embrace with my own story.
As a young-er lurker, emboldened by the seemingly benign nature of the founding moderators, I dared to ask a question.
My first post was something like: "Why do we need minute repeaters in the 20th century." Oops....I meant 21st century...it's my age
The warm and patient welcome and replies were most educational. I came back to the fora with more questions and today, after 15 years, I can reveal the sum total of my minute repeater collection........ZERO. But we've had FUN getting here!
"Do they have AS MUCH entitlement to their approach and thoughts as everyone else?"
As PuristS, there can be only one answer: YES.
Congratulations PuristS All !
Regards,
MTF
