Rarity is only one criteria
Sep 18, 2014,03:51 AM
Joe- I fully understand your point about rarity. Rarity for me is one criteria but also by far not the only one.
I also understand your point about being overly concerned what others are doing and what other people wear.
I can't help it. I do worry about that. I worry all the time about the perception of things. Objects. People. Its a fault I have for sure.
Probably the platinum blue daytona is relatively rare a watch. But in certain crowds- it is not rare.
Even if I would like it- it does not differentiate me in any way whatsoever. Why would I buy a watch that some of my friends have?
Where it would be seen often in certain social scenes like Gstaad, Monte Carlo, London, Paris etc. I want to be different.
My mother brought as up to always be different than others. When others turn left my mother always turned right.
She tried to teach us that with some success.
I have the financial means to differentiate myself from the crowd. Plus a certain knowledge. That combination will most
likely always lead me to vintage watches-with history rather than a modern watch. Having said that I am considering buying
a 5270 from Patek (the discontinued version). Is it a modern watch? Yes. But it is a watch that speaks to me. Relatively rare.
Misunderstood. I don't mind that someone else might have that watch. On the contrary- it might be a nice club to belong to.
In principle I have nothing against modern watches. They are reliable and practical. But for the most part (90% of the time) they are not for me.
I don't want to be ever wearing something that someone can just go in a store a buy. Where its only about 'the purchase' and not about knowledge.
Its maybe a narrow minded way of looking at things but that is the way it is.
Best Edmond
ps: One thing I do admire you for: the balance between old and new. I cannot yet get that balance right....
