i never really cared for Rolex.

It is as you've said that many people think/perceive (and believe) that Rolex is the epitome of watches. They represent a type of "status" therefore they are very common on many wrists of all walks of life. It's not a bad thing by any means, especially for Rolex, but I like to wear something different. When I wear my Patek, unless you're a Purist or are really into watches, people don't know the brand. If, by some off chance they ask what kind of watch is that and I tell them a Patek, they say, "I've never heard of it. Is it like a Rolex?" LOL To me, wearing a Patek is like wearing a "secret" in plain view. But if you wear a Rolex, that brand is recognizable.
Then, enter the GV Milgauss. I saw it, I loved it and I wanted it. I loved the look, the weight on my wrist and I loved it more because it didn't look like a Rolex per se. So, I bought it. Love it. Virtually never wear my Patek nowadays. For the longest time my Milgauss was my daily beater.
Then, the stainless, black dial Daytona. Saw it, loved it, wanted it so I bought it. Although it is still recognizable as a Rolex, I like the piece. I buy what I like and I wear what I buy. Owning these from Rolex has made me take a closer look at the brand. Perhaps all those people who have been wearing them knew something that I didn't.
I'm still not sold on the modern Subs, etc., but the vintage pieces, I love those. For some, a Rolex is the entry level to high end horology. For others, it is the highest brand one can attain to in timepieces. Either way, Rolex is still a solid brand and I will continue to buy it ~ should I see one that I like.
Aloha,
